New Member Guide

When you sign your yellow membership and “check-off” cards and complete your probation, your employer will deduct two hours pay per months from your paycheck for union dues. You pay a one-time UA initiation fee of $10.

If you work at Cornell you are required either to become a member or to pay the same amount as a fee for union representation (called “agency shop”).

Your dues keep our Union strong enough to work for all our members and all working families. Dues cover the costs of operating the union and its office, as well as representing you by negotiating and administering the contract.

If also costs us to train you, produce the Union newspaper, maintain a strike fund, and support programs run by the International Union to benefit you — like the UAW educational center at Black Lake in Michigan, and its research and legal expenses.
