Cornell Bargaining StartsJuly 2009
Dear brothers and sisters: Your bargaining Team is committed to winning a fair contract for our members at Cornell, and we are determined to continue bargaining until management provides a wage package that is fair and acceptable. They have not yet done so even as our current contract expires. We insist on a fair contract. We don't want to pedal backwards. We have too many members not getting a family-sustaining living wage; too many members struggling with the high cost of living; too many members straining to find the money on our low wages to feed our families, support our children, save for college and for retirement, pay the mortgage or the rent, deal with rising transportaion costs, and tend to pressing health needs. We recognize that times have been difficult for Cornell as well, but remain convinced that it has the resources to provide a fair contract. And these resources will only grow, with the financial crisis now passed. Even now Cornell has an investment portfolio of over $4 billion. In a matter of weeks during Reunion it raised an additional $112 million, setting an all-time record. And it has hugh cash reserves ready for investment. Why can't it invest in a fair contract? Without a fair wage offer we have decided to extend the current contract while we keep bargaining. In this situation nothing changes for the members. You will keep coming to work. We will keep negotiating a contract. The old contract remains in force and your stewards will keep filing grievances as necessary. You will keep receiving a paycheck just as you are now. Stand fast. Don't listen to rumors. Call the Union Hall if you have any questions. And stay ready to attend an informational rally that we are planning for the near future. Remember, we also have allies and friends along with us who are helping as we talk. UAW Contract - Cornell Democrats Stand fast. Don't listen to rumors. Call the Union Hall if you have any questions. And stay ready to attend an informational rally that we are planning for the near future. During this time you may hear lots of things from lots of different people. It may be from management. Or perhaps from a co-worker. What they tell you may be true, or may be false. Be very careful about any rumors you hear. Whenever you want to check out the facts speak to one of the members of the bargaining team, a steward, or call the Union Hall at 272-4108. Remember this. Only the members can decide to accept or reject a contract. Your bargaining team will work hard to get a fair contract. At that point, there will be a meeting for all members, probably close to the end of June, where we will report on our progress and where your input will be crucial.
